Half Farewell to Sergej Karcevskij and the Linguistic Circle of Prague with References

Half Farewell to Sergej Karcevskij and the Linguistic Circle of Prague with References

TANAKA Akio

I have thought on language through the rich results of the linguistic Circle of Prague and its important member Sergej Karcevskij. But now my recent thinking has inclined towards algebraic or arithmetic geometrical method and description. Probably it is the time of half farewell to those milestones which led me to the standing place here with rather sufficient results in my ability. Great thanks to all that always encouraged me for hard and vague target on language especially meaning and its surroundings. And also to CHINO Eiichi with love and respect who taught me all the bases of language study. For recent results see the following papers group named AGL Arithmetic Geometry Language and related essays.

Now I am Enough Old for Remembering the Past

Now I am Enough Old for Remembering the Past

TANAKA Akio

Recently I read Susan Sontag’s WHERE THE STRESS FALLS, 2001. The impression is a little different with the other books.
I was never the good reader of her, but her existence was always strong and had glittered.
The time was Sixties that contained the infinite things in it.
Now I am enough old for remembering the time.
She wrote a fine essay on the time, Thirty Years Later … , 1996. The pages are short but sufficient to describe the time that was infinite and endless.
If her life was able to be shine, while my Sixties was always under the tiny dim light.
At the place where I was, the long view never could be seen. I never thought on the things as I was very coward and was fluttered even at the very tiny event of the time. I was infirm and timidity.
What I could do at that time was read or turned pages of the text books of some foreign languages.
How little and shallow heart I had, pitiable and poor existence. Probably till now.

Tradition of Dictionary, The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary

Tradition of Dictionary

TANAKA Akio

Walter W. Skeat’s Concise Dictionary of English Etymology 2007 is compact but rich content dictionary of English etymology, that lets us feel the Great Britain’s long tradition of philology and dictionary making.
When surveying the dictionary making in England, its typography’s beauty and binding’s durability are enough amazing for us living  in the Oriental world.
Especially I really think that the leather spine of the book’s stoutness make us feel the historical heritage. Regretfully Japan’s book spines are not so strong than the Great Britain till now.
My The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary was made in 1956 but after half a century the leather spine is very smooth and beautiful against my comparatively rough handling.

Reread Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited

Reread Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited

TANAKA Akio

Reread Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited, 1945, that is one of the dearest novels ever read in my youth.

At that time, the impression was afar from my youth image, but now all the situations described in the novel are deeply sympathized with my recent thinking of older.

Oh surely time flied by as arrows. In my youth, the late 1960s are confused by the universities’ rebellions to the established.

I, even as cowardly poor student, also was involved in the chaos at the time. I every day only read some foreign languages’ textbooks and learnt some conjugations and declensions in the room or library.

A few teachers of foreign languages accepted my situation and gently taught me the particulars of languages, Chinese, Russian, Korean, German, French and so on.

Beginning

How is the time alive in language?

When one first hears the existence of time in language, he may doubt its certainty. But I have intuitively believe it since I learned the ancient Chinese inscription on bone ad tortoise shell (in Chinese called Jiaguwen). In my early 20s, I met with the book of Chinese modern linguists, WANG Guowei, this belief changed the conviction.

Perhaps return to physics

Recently my situation for language research has changed rather drastically.
I have loved mathematics ever since I understood that mathematics was the only fantastic way for solving the problems of the nature through absolute clear description.

The days of von Neumann Algebra

My study’s turning point from intuitive essay to mathematical writing was at the days of learning von Neumann Algebra, that was written by four parts from von Neumann Algebra 1 to von Neumann Algebra 4. The days are about between 2006 and 2008, when I was thinking about switching over from intuitive to algebraic writing.

Time in Word

Time inherent in word has been one of the most fantastic theme for me for a long period. WANG Guowei’s paper was strongly hinted to the theme towards first writing a trial paper on it. Roman Jakobson was also gave me the basic notion related with the theme. Still now the problem has not solved as the starting point. But being aided by mathematical method and description,  learning on it has become more attractive in these days.
